Description of Trainings

Aries Fire Service holds a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Northern Rockies coordinating Group (NRCG) to conduct training (MOU Number - 18-MU-11015600-070). All classes are taught by Dan Martin who has more than 30 plus years of experience in the wildland firefighting field. The list below serves as descriptions of all the training classes we provide. FFT2 - FireFighter Training Type 2 (Basic Field Day)

FFT2 is an entry level training for aspiring wildland firefighters. This class is required if you wish to work on a hand crew or engine as a wildland firefighter. This class consists of online courses with a required in-person field day.

Here is a list and link to all the courses you must complete online preferably before the scheduled field day:

  1. I-100 Intro to Incident Command System (ICS)

  2. IS-700.b An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

  3. S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior

    • Please note: you must make an account with the The National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s (NWCG) Wildland Fire Learning Portal which is the link above. Once you make an account you can then search for the “S-190” to complete the course.

  4. L-180 Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service

    • Please note: you must make an account with the NWCG’s Wildland Fire Learning Portal. Once you make an account you can then search for the “L-180” to complete the course.

  5. S-130 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior

    • Please note: you must make an account with the NWCG’s Wildland Fire Learning Portal. Once you make an account you can then search for the “S-130” to complete the course.

The online coursework roughly takes 30 hours to complete. Please allow yourself enough time to complete these courses before your field day.

It is imperative to save and print all of your certificates from every online course. You will need these materials when registering for the field day, please bring all printed copies of certificates in a folder. Your instructor will ask for all of your certificates first thing.

The field day is an important 8- hour training with a lunch break (therefore you should bring your own lunch and snacks). We will go over the materials covered from the online coursework as well as an in-depth look at hand tools, line construction, hose lays, pumps, fittings, required PPE, and personal items.

 

RT-130 (Annual Refresher)

The RT-130 is an annual refresher training all wildland firefighters must take to stay up-to-date with fireline safety practices. In order to participate in this class you MUST have previous fire experience unless you are training to drive water tenders or are training to be a heavy equipment operator. DO NOT REGISTER for this class if you are new to wildland firefighting and your intent is to be a wildland firefighter on a crew or an engine.

The intent of RT-130, Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher (WFSTAR) is to focus line-going personnel on operations and decision-making issues related to fireline and all-hazard incident safety in order to recognize and mitigate risk, maintain safe and effective practices, and reduce accidents and near misses.

- The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NCWG)

FFT1 - Firefighter Training Type 1

FFT1 is a training to level-up in the fire industry and is a step above being a FFT2. FFT1 Task books will be issued after completion of this class. The task book must be completed to be qualified as a FFT1. The task book consists of specifics such as learning how to properly use portable or mobile multi-channel radios, serve as a lookout, and demobilize and checkout from a fire. The tasks must be completed and signed off by your supervisor on the fireline (such as an engine boss or a crew boss).

The National Wildlfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) describes the FFT1 training as:

The Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) leads a small group (usually not more than seven members) and is responsible for their safety on wildland and prescribed fire incidents. The FFT1 supervises resources at the Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) level and reports to a single Resource Crew Boss.

- The National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NCWG)

The FFT1 training is roughly 12 hours over 2 days. Therefore you must attend both days of the course!

S-230 Crew Boss (Single Resource)

The S-230 is a course for experienced firefighters looking to become a single resource boss (this can be anything from an engine boss, a crew boss, a hand crew boss, a falling boss etc). This training is specifically designed to help firefighters advance in a supervisory role.

The Prerequisite Qualifications and Training for this course include:

  • Qualified as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)

  • Successful completion of Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290)

  • Satisfactory completion of pre-course work (this includes online material that must be completed before the class)

    • Please note: Precourse work for the S-230 is found here. You must have a login with the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s (NWCG) website to take the required pre-course material. Once logged in search for “S-230 Precourse Work” to find the coursework. ALL ONLINE PRECOURSE WORK MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE IN-PERSON CLASS.

Please bring all certificates from your online precourse work to this in-person training. The certificates must be printed out.

S-231 Engine Boss (Single Resource)

The S-231 is a course for experienced firefighters looking to become a single resource Engine Boss. This training is specifically designed to help firefighters advance in a supervisory role.

The Prerequisite Qualifications and Training for this course include:

  • Qualified as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)

  • Successful completion of the S-230 (class information listed above)

Aries Fire Services offer the S230 & 231 at the same time so you must complete the precourse work for the S-230.

S-211 - Portable Pumps & Water Use

The S-211 is a course designed to provide wildland firefighters better knowledge of portable pumps and water delivery systems. In this training students will learn the proper use and set-up of portable pumps. This training is focused on portable pumps only and does not include engine pumps. Popular portable pumps include the Mark 3 and Honda trash pumps.

This course is good for those who are or are looking to become a FFT1. This training is not required, however you will can gain valuable, important knowledge which can be used throughout your career as wildland firefighter.

This training consists of 2 comprehensive days focusing on learning and using actual portable pumps, hose lays, establishing a draft, laying hose, and general troubleshooting of water systems.

S-212 - Wildland Fire Chainsaws

The S-212 is a course designed to provide firefighters basic knowledge, usage, and maintenance of internal combustion engine powered chainsaws in the wildland fire environment. Prior knowledge and use of chainsaws is not required to take this course. Though you must be qualified as a FFT2.

This course is great for those who are or are looking to become a FFT1, or a Crew or Engine Boss (S-230 & S-231). This training is not required, however you will can gain valuable knowledge which can be used throughout your career as wildland firefighter. We highly recommend this course for anyone interested in progressing their wildland fire knowledge.

This training consists of 3 to 4 comprehensive days focusing on learning the use of chainsaws and their application in the wildland fire environment.

The Prerequisite Qualifications and Training for this course include:

  • Qualified as Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2)

  • Successful completion of the precourse work

    • Please note: Precourse work for the S212 is found here. You must have a login with the National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s (NWCG) website to take the required pre-course material. Once logged in search for “S212 Precourse Work” to find the coursework. ALL ONLINE PRECOURSE WORK MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE IN-PERSON CLASS.

S-215 - Fire Operations in the Wildland Urban Interface

The S-215 is a course designed to provide wildland firefighters better knowledge of topics such as firefighter safety in the interface, managing human factors in the interface, pre-incident planning, sizeup and initial strategy, structure triage, structure protection overview tactics in the interface, etc.

This training is not required, however it will further your knowledge of fires in the wildland urban interface.

This training consists of 3 comprehensive days focusing on in-classroom learning and open discussion.

The Prerequisite Qualifications for this course include:

  • Qualified as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)
